Tater Tournament Schedule

December 29, 2009

The Tater Tourney, formerly known as the Vardaman Tournament, is one of the longest running mid-season basketball tournaments since former Vardaman coach Greg Haynes created nearly 15 years ago.

Last season the West Point Lady Green Wave defeated Vardaman 63-31 to earn the girls championship while Bruce downed Caledonia 69-47 in the boys championship game last January. West Point defeated Calhoun City 77-68 in the boys consolation game while Bruce took home a 75-59 win over Calhoun City in the girls consolation game.

Calhoun City, Bruce, West Point, and Caledonia return to participate in the tournament.

“We’ve had some great games over the past few years and we should have a lot more this year,” said Vardaman boys coach Billy Dill. “We hope everyone takes the chance to come out and see a lot of good basketball games.”

Houston 2010 Preview & Schedule

December 26, 2009

Houston Lady Hilltoppers

First-year head coach Rakesia Gray has not missed a step in continuing the success brought to the Lady Toppers basketball program built by former coach Dana Buchanan.

Fresh off their 18-2 finish season that led them to Jackson, Houston has jumped out to an impressive 10-3 start and have been battled tested with back-to-back three-point wins over Alcorn Central and Corinth along with a pair of hard-fought losses to Aberdeen and defending Class 1A Champion McAdams.

The Lady Toppers open with three-straight region games against the Kosciusko Lady Whippets, Amory Lady Panthers, and Caledonia Lady Confederates. A strong start to the second half of the season would put Houston in the driver’s seat when it comes to earning the number one seed in the region tournament.

Houston will close out January by participating in the Robertson Sportswear Classic before traveling to Louisville for their final region game and closing the regular season on the road against Calhoun City.

Houston Hilltoppers

While the Lady Toppers are off to an impressive start, the Toppers look to make a strong surge into the 2010 half of the season and make major waves in the hunt for the Class 4A title.

Houston opens with a tough match-up against Hernando in the North Pontotoc Premier Printing Classic on January 2 before opening region play at home on Jan 8 against the vastly improved Kosciusko to start a crucial three-game run for the Toppers.

After their home game against Kosciusko, the Toppers will travel to vastly improved Amory on Jan 12 and will return home against traditional power Caledonia to cap off a stretch of games that could put them into running for the number one seed inside region play.

Non-region games against in-county rivals Houlka and Okolona along with Columbus and Calhoun City will more than prime the Toppers for post-season play.

Houston 2010 Basketball Schedule

Jan 16 — @ Houlka

ICC 2010 Baseball Schedule

December 26, 2009

The defending MACJC state baseball champs, Itawamba Community College, released its schedule for the upcoming 2010 campaign.  Head coach Rick Collier and his nationally-ranked program opens on Feb. 6th against Southwest Tennessee at Crubaugh Field.

“We’re looking forward to begin defense of our state title,” said Collier, who is starting his eighth at the helm of the Indians. ”We understand there will be an even bigger bullseye on our backs this year.”

Last year, Collier’s club finished 43-13 and for the second straight season was among the nation’s top five (4th) in the NJCAA final poll of the year.

“We lost some key personnel from that team,” added Collier, who is the only head coach in the history of ICC’s baseball program to have won two state crowns.  “But we had a nice fall and I liked the way our pitching developed.  We need to get a couple of our freshmen hitters to step up and we’ll be o.k.”

The Indians, who have won six of the last seven north division titles under Collier, will begin their slate inside the league on March 16, at home, against Mississippi Delta.
